Going further back at WWDC 2001 Steve Jobs presented OSX as the best platform for Java development, including the WebObjects port to Java which for a considerable period of time ran the Apple store. Back when Leopard was coming out, the 64-bit JVM and development on 10.6 was halted in preference to Snow Leopard leaving PPC users out in the cold with an antiquated version of Java. Whatever has caused this change of heart, it's not the first time Apple has caused pain for Java developers.

The Java runtime shipping in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, will continue to be supported and maintained through the standard support cycles of those products. This means that the Apple-produced runtime will not be maintained at the same level, and may be removed from future versions of Mac OS X.

What's the safer way to go? Put up with the annoying popups and not install the legacy Java, or install the older Java? Seems like I'd want the most current version that came with Sierra. My question is, should I even bother doing this? It sounds like old versions of Java are vulnerable.
Is that true? Or if I install this legacy version, does it retain the most current version too? For example, if program X needs the old version, it can uses that, but the rest of the programs that use the current version use that? Do they run side by side? I understand that the fix is to install a legacy version of Java, and it sounds like that removes the most current version of Java. I guess my question is, do I want to do this? Is it safe? It pointed me to this page that explains the fix. So I searched this sub and only found one post from three months ago on this, but it didn't answer my question. When I upgraded to Yosemite I think I had to do this and just downloaded the JDK. When upgrading to Sierra an annoying popup now appears several times during the day that says I need to Install a JDK.
